Unifroms to unite city’s sportstars

It’s a perilous thing, choosing a sports uniform.
During the Olympics we see nation after nation succumb to unsightly designs, patterns that resemble something the mascot has thrown up on, and awkward accessories.
Where do these sports fashion designers come from, we ask every four years -” are they the fashion catwalk rejects?
At the 2008 Olympics, the New Zealand team caused a stir wearing Crocs chunky plastic shoes. The Canadians didn’t have too many home fans either -” one of the nicer descriptions of their uniforms was a national -œembarrassment.
Now the Queer Sports Alliance Melbourne (QSAM) has joined the sports fashion field, albeit with more taste, with last week’s launch of a new uniform T-shirt for the upcoming Copenhagen Outgames.
QSAM has chosen to play it safe -” sticking with a traditional dark blue and white striped number, the T-shirt is unlikely to offend many at the July event.
The hues represent Victoria’s official colours and will be worn by competitors during the Outgames opening and closing ceremonies.
QSAM’s Malcolm Campbell is confident the design will suit the event, even if it’s a little on the -œboring side. He encourages people to buy a few extra to swap with other competitors during the Games.
-œIt’s an established tradition and fun to swap [T-shirts] at the closing ceremony.
Campbell said numbers registering to attend the Copenhagen Outgames are going -œslowly, however, he expects more to sign up in the coming months, with an expected 50-strong contingent.
World Outgames is an international sports and cultural event for the GLBTI community and hosts tournaments in 38 different sports for competitors at all skills levels.
Registration for the event is open until April 30.
T-shirts are now available online for $40 ,with a discounted price for members. Orders are open until the end of registration.
