The first day

By John Meyer
Beau bounded through the bedroom door and vaulted himself up over my torso and landed head first onto my pillow. Laughing, he cuddled in. “Good morning, Daddy.” He kissed my cheek.
“Good morning, my big first day at school boy. Did you sleep well?”  He nodded playfully and snuggled in for a few moments.
Beau was up at the table, wolfing down his Weetbix. He couldn’t wait to finish so he could get dressed in his new uniform.  A tiny light blue short-sleeved shirt with a little red cross stitched next to the name of the school stood to attention on the hanger in the kitchen.
We put his shorts and socks and shoes on first, then tucked in his little shirt. He was all ready to go. He looked marvellous and was so excited.
The bag on his back was nearly bigger than he was. We marched to the front gates where all his other mates were, along with his Year 6 buddy who ran over to say hello and welcome him.  I couldn’t help but think of my first day at a school, having moved around as a kid, being dropped off and left with the principal to take me to a class already at work. It was frightening.
At the assembly, Dawn mentioned how this year the school had scored some new male teachers, which is a blessing considering the staff for the past few years had been completely female.
I surveyed the quadrangle and noticed the hottest teacher I had ever seen. He looked about 25. I found his peer standing next to the Year 3 kids, equally young and hot.
All the mums started giggling about the new teachers. I concurred a few times, to their extra giggles.
The kindergarten children were swiftly taken away from their surprisingly calm parents, and the P&C committee started pouring bubbles out for the parents. I couldn’t believe it — hot male teachers, booze and priests. It had sin written all over it and it was only 9.30am.
I made myself completely available to speak to the P&C president so I could find a way into the cliché parents group. It looks like I’ll be in charge of the upcoming fete. Perhaps I’ll just join it into Fair Day.
I don’t think some of the new teachers would mind so much… now pass me that chalice again.
