A quiet Midsumma

While many of you are in the midst of Midsumma season, the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby has taken a distinct approach to Melbourne’s queer cultural festival — staying in.

Midsumma brings a plethora of activities with which you can break all those New Year resolutions. But 2010 is going to be a special year, and we want to be ready to give everything we’ve got when the time is right. 2010 is a double election year.

In November we will have a chance to show the Victorian Labor Government exactly what we think of their exemptions for religious organisations in the Equal Opportunity Act. At some unspecified point, probably during or after August, we can show Rudd consequences of indulging in the blessing of the Australian Christian Lobby while denying equality to others.

But the elections aren’t all the Lobby is doing this year. We will continue OUT and SAFE, our prototype project that is a collaborative effort with key stakeholders tackling violence in the Moreland local government area. We have also launched the third edition of the Not Yet Equal survey, a five-yearly report examining the incidence and impact of discrimination and harassment aimed at LGBTIQ Victorians.

So if you want to do more to affect the decisions of decision-makers than just casting a vote, get in touch with us. We are always looking for volunteers with skills in communications and media, IT, writing and editing, fundraising and marketing, and recruitment and volunteer management. Now is the time to get involved.

Don’t just go to the parties — help make a real difference in 2010.
