On January 25, just after midnight, a man I’ll call Adam was walking through Alma Park when he was confronted by two or three animals (violent men) carrying torches.

The animals shone their torches into Adam’s eyes and demanded to know if he was a ‘faggot’.They decided Adam was a ‘faggot’ and worthy of a beating. I cannot begin to understand the justification these animals used to undertake such a vicious beating, but it ended with Adam being bashed and slashed twice with a knife and spending a week in hospital (see Southern Star 070).

It became clear to the police investigating that the animals had been in Alma Park for at least 30 minutes before the attack on Adam.

One witness who came forward described also being confronted by the animals. They determined that the witness was not a ‘faggot’ and therefore worthy of being free to leave the park, without being attacked.  This witness then sat at the entrance to the park, warning other men not to enter. Unfortunately, Adam entered the park from another entrance.
The witness told of seeing other men chased from the park by these torch-carrying animals. Police need every piece of information that we can get hold of about incidents like this. We are appealing for these men to come forward, even if they believe they have nothing of value to tell us.

These animals are dangerous. Adam was cut twice, once to the arm and once to the thigh. If the cut to the thigh was a little lower, a major artery may have been severed, resulting in Adam’s death.

We want to make sure these animals do not get away with it and don’t strike again. Information from the Anti-Violence Project suggests that torch-carrying animals have been seen in Alma Park previously. If they think they got away with this, they may do it again.

I cannot stress how important intelligence-gathering about these incidents is. If you are a victim of a homophobia, not matter how minor or extreme, the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officers want to know about it. Call us, email us or go through the Anti-Violence Project.

While we can’t solve every incident, it helps us to start putting together the jigsaw puzzle to prevent and hopefully solve criminal acts such as this one.

If you were in Alma Park on the night, there are several ways you can contact police to provide information. Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au. Police Gay and Lesbian Liaison: 9247 5346/6944. Contacting Crime Stoppers and Gay and Lesbian Liaison can be anonymous. Anti-Violence Project online reporting at www.antiviolence.info.
