Midsumma goes west

Related articles

Traditionally confined to the CBD and queer south/northside suburbs like Collingwood and Prahran, this year Midsumma is going west — all the way to Hobsons Bay.
On February 3, Hobsons Bay City Council is hosting a gay and lesbian forum, titled GOwest, which aims to give gay and lesbian community members in Melbourne’s west a platform to discuss ways in which the council might better support and advocate for them. Findings from the forum will be presented in a formal report to the council.
Hobsons Bay is about 10km west of Melbourne, encompassing suburbs such as Williamstown, Altona and Laverton. Deputy Mayor Tony Briffa said the forum would open the lines of communication between the council and its gay and lesbian community.
“This is the first forum of its kind in Hobsons Bay and in Melbourne’s wider western region,” Briffa said in a statement.
“It is a step towards the Council being able to identify and support the needs of the local GLBTIQ community, and will assist to work towards achieving those needs.
“I encourage members and friends of the GLBTIQ community to come along to the forum to have their say on issues of importance, enjoy some live entertainment, have a bite to eat and socialise with other members of the GLBTIQ community.”
The forum will be held at 6.30pm on February 3 at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre, 115 Civic Pde, Altona, and will feature a live performance by the Fabulous Sparklettes.
